Interview with Narayankaji Shrestha
A meeting of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), an alliance of the Madhesh-based parties, has decided to continue its protests while keeping open the doors to talks. The Front’s meeting held in the capital on Thursday on the backdrop of the passing of the new constitution by the CA on Wednesday, also decided to mark September 20 – the day the country is set to get the new constitution – as a black day and organize protest programs on September 21.
“We’ve concluded that the government has attempted to suppress the movement in the Terai by using force,” Front’s spokesperson Sarbendra Nath Sukla said after the meeting. “So we’ll continue with our agitation while keeping the doors open for talks.”
The UDMF has set preconditions for the government to fulfill before its sits for talks. The conditions include, among others, withdrawal of army and prohibitory zones in Terai.
UDMF took to the streets over a month ago to protest against the proposed delineation of federal provinces.
